〜の極み (~no kiwami) — the height of ~
After a noun, 'the very peak of it' — luxury, exhaustion or joy at its limit.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A day off, a soak in the hot spring and beer from midday — 「贅沢の極みだ」, 'the height of luxury!'
- The tone is stiff and written; with a friend, 「最高の贅沢だね」is plenty.
Meaning
- When you climb a mountain there is a summit at the very top — 「極み」is exactly that: the last, highest point of something.
- It works for good things (感激・幸せ) and bad ones (疲労・無責任), and not only for your own feeling but also for someone else's state — 「選手たちは疲労の極みにあった」(the players were at the height of exhaustion).
How to attach
Because it is a noun, 「だ/です」comes at the end, or you use it as 「〜の極みに達する」(reach the peak of ~).
Versus what you know
- The previous 「極まりない」and 「ことこの上ない」attach to adjectives, but 「極み」is itself a noun, so it joins another noun with 「の」: 贅沢の極み・疲労の極み・感激の極み.
- That is what makes it much wider than the next point, 「の至り」.
Watch out
The nouns are usually kanji words like 贅沢・疲労・感激; a verb or adjective cannot attach directly — you cannot say 「疲れたの極み」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
休みの日に温泉に入って昼からビールを飲むとは、贅沢の極みだ。
やすみのひにおんせんにはいってひるからビールをのむとは、ぜいたくのきわみだ。
A day off, a soak in the hot spring and beer from midday — the height of luxury.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 昼からビールを飲む = drinking beer from midday → 贅沢 = luxury (a noun) → attach 「の極み」 = the height of luxury → 「だ」 ends the sentence.
三日間ほとんど寝ずに働き、体は疲労の極みに達していた。
みっかかんほとんどねずにはたらき、からだはひろうのきわみにたっしていた。
After three days of work with almost no sleep, my body had reached the height of exhaustion.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 寝ずに働き = working without sleep → 疲労 = exhaustion (a bodily state) → 「の極み」 = the height of exhaustion → 「に達していた」 = had reached it.
入社式で社長から直接声をかけていただき、感激の極みです。
にゅうしゃしきでしゃちょうからちょくせつこえをかけていただき、かんげきのきわみです。
At the welcome ceremony the company president spoke to me in person — I am moved beyond words.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 社長から声をかけていただき = the president spoke to me (the reason) → 感激 = being deeply moved (a noun, positive) → 「の極み」 = moved to the utmost → 「です」 (polite).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「長い残業が続き、社員は皆、疲労の__に達していた。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Other people's physical state — which noun is the wide one?
疲労の極みに達する = reach the height of exhaustion. 「疲労の至り」is wrong — 至り only goes with a few words for one's own humble feelings.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: 「の極み」needs a noun before it.
「疲れた」is a verb; 「の極み」only follows a noun. Say 「疲労の極みだ」.
「贅沢の___だ」— which can follow 「の」?
💡 Hint: A noun comes after 「の」— which of the four is a noun?
極み is a noun, so N + の + 極み. 極まりない and ことこの上ない attach to adjectives, not after 「の」.
