〜もなんともない (~mo nan tomo nai) — not ~ at all

'Does it hurt?' 'Nope, not one bit!' — the spoken way to flatly deny what others assume.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    い-adj [い] + く + も + なんともない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

At the clinic a small child is scared before an injection. You laugh and show your arm: 「ほら、注射なんて痛くもなんともないよ」— 'Look, a shot doesn't hurt one bit!'

    Meaning

When others assume 'surely it hurts, surely you're scared', 「〜もなんともない」cuts that down hard — 'nothing of the sort'.

    How to attach

    • Attach the く-form of an い-adjective + 「もなんともない」(痛くもなんともない), and 「たい」works the same way (行きたくもなんともない).
    • な-adjectives and nouns take the shape 「〜でもなんでもない」(好きでもなんでもない).

    Versus what you know

    • N3「全然〜ない」「少しも〜ない」also mean 'not at all', but they are plain denials; 「もなんともない」carries a shrug or defiance: 'what are you talking about, nothing at all!'
    • N2Don't confuse it with the 「〜っこない」(できっこない) — that's a guess that something 'can't possibly happen', while this is about your own feeling or experience now.

    Watch out

    • The key rule: this is casual talk with friends, usually with feelings and sensations like 痛い・怖い・寂しい・恥ずかしい・欲しい・おもしろい
    • It doesn't attach straight to verbs (for verbs, see the next point, 「やしない」), and it isn't used in formal writing.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    ほら、注射なんて痛くもなんともないよ。

    ほら、ちゅうしゃなんていたくもなんともないよ。

See? A shot doesn't hurt one bit.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 注射なんて = a shot (made light of) → 痛い = painful → く-form: 痛く → we attach 「もなんともない」 = doesn't hurt at all → 「よ」 reassures the child.

    一人暮らしは寂しくもなんともない。むしろ気楽だよ。

    ひとりぐらしはさびしくもなんともない。むしろきらくだよ。

Living alone isn't lonely at all. If anything, it's relaxing.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一人暮らし = living alone → 寂しい = lonely → く-form: 寂しく → 「もなんともない」= not at all (rejects what others assume) → むしろ気楽 = if anything, it's relaxing.

    あんな高いバッグ、別に欲しくもなんともない。

    あんなたかいバッグ、べつにほしくもなんともない。

That expensive bag? I don't want it in the least.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あんな高いバッグ = that expensive bag → 別に = not particularly → 欲しい = wanted → く-form: 欲しく → 「もなんともない」= don't want it at all → a bit of stubbornness shows too.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「お化け屋敷なんて、__もなんともないよ。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: Which form of the い-adjective?
