    〜やしない (~ya shinai) — (definitely) not ~ / won't ~ at all

'As if he'd ever listen!' — a strong spoken 'no', full of irritation, resignation or reassurance.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Vます [ます] + やしない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

A Japanese mother is complaining to a coworker: 「うちの息子、何度言っても聞きやしないのよ」— 'My son — no matter how often I tell him, as if he'd ever listen!'

    Meaning

    • 「〜やしない」is the spoken, emotional form of 「〜はしない」(聞きはしない) — a strong 'doesn't at all, won't ever'.
    • Compared with a plain 「聞かない」it carries much more irritation, disappointment or 'what can you do'
    • On the other hand it also reassures, as in 「誰も気づきやしないよ」— 'don't worry, nobody will notice.'

    How to attach

    • Attach 「やしない」to the ます-stem of a verb (聞きやしない・食べやしない); する → しやしない, 来る → 来(き)やしない.
    • In even more clipped speech it becomes 「〜ゃしない」(わかりゃしない), as in the 「といったらありゃしない」you saw before.

    Versus what you know

    • N2It looks like the 「〜っこない」(できっこない), but that judges possibility — 'can't possibly'; 「やしない」simply states hard that someone doesn't do it.
    • N2「〜ものか」(行くものか) is the speaker's own vow, 'I'll never!'.
    • The previous point 「もなんともない」was for adjectives; this one is for verbs.

    Watch out

The key rule: this is casual talk with friends or family; it isn't used in polite notices, office reports or writing.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    うちの息子は、何度注意しても聞きやしない。

    うちのむすこは、なんどちゅういしてもききやしない。

No matter how many times I warn my son, he just won't listen.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 何度注意しても = no matter how many times I warn him → 聞く = to listen → from ます-form 聞きます we drop 「ます」: 聞き → we attach 「やしない」 = won't listen at all → the parent's frustration shows.

    こんな小さな傷、誰も気づきやしないよ。

    こんなちいさなきず、だれもきづきやしないよ。

A tiny scratch like this — nobody's going to notice it.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 小さな傷 = a small scratch → 誰も = nobody → 気づく = to notice → ます-form: 気づき → 「やしない」= won't notice at all → 「よ」 reassures a friend.

    あの人に頼んだって、手伝ってくれやしない。

    あのひとにたのんだって、てつだってくれやしない。

Even if you ask that person, they won't lift a finger to help.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 頼んだって = even if you ask (casual ても) → 手伝ってくれる = to help someone out → from ます-form 手伝ってくれます we drop 「ます」: 手伝ってくれ → 「やしない」= will never help → a resigned "what can you do" feeling.

    Question: 1/3
