Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
The restaurant you work at is a hundred years old. The new owner says: 「百年続く店の名に恥じない味を守りたい」— 'I want to keep a taste that doesn't shame the name of a shop that has lasted a century.'
Meaning
「恥じる」= to feel ashamed, so 「〜に恥じない」= not having to feel ashamed before that name, title or tradition — in other words, worthy of it, up to its standard.
How to attach
- Attach a noun + 「に恥じない」; it mostly goes with words of honour or standard like 名・名前・伝統・肩書き・良心・代表, and a noun usually follows: 「〜に恥じない活躍・試合・生き方」.
- It also appears as a goal: 「〜に恥じないよう(に)努力する」.
Versus what you know
- The 「〜に足る」you learned earlier (信頼に足る人物) also sounds like 'worthy', but it judges whether something is good enough to trust or respect
- 「に恥じない」measures you against a name or title you already carry, or your own conscience, and says you don't fall short.
- Its opposite is the earlier 「〜にあるまじき」(教師にあるまじき行為 = conduct unworthy of a teacher).
Watch out
The key rule: what comes before must be an honour, a title or a moral standard — it doesn't fit ordinary things like weather or price — and the tone is always positive and formal.
