〜てはばからない (~te wa habakaranai) — (say / do) ~ openly, without any hesitation
When someone boldly says out loud what others would keep to themselves — the language of articles and news.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- There's a senior in the office who says in front of everyone at meetings, 「この会社で一番仕事ができるのは私だ」, without the slightest embarrassment.
- In Japan people usually keep that kind of thing to themselves, but he says it boldly. That scene is 「彼は自分が一番だと言ってはばからない」.
Meaning
「はばかる」means 'to hold back out of fear or shame', so 「はばからない」= 'doesn't hold back' — this person openly says or does what most people would hide or soften.
How to attach
Attach the て-form of a verb + 「はばからない」; it usually comes with speaking verbs, as in 「〜と言ってはばからない」「〜と公言してはばからない」, and also before a noun, as in 「〜てはばからない人」.
Versus what you know
- The 「〜てやまない」you learned earlier is also Vて + a negative shape, but that is the speaker's own long, clean wish (願ってやまない)
- 「てはばからない」is said from outside about someone else's nerve or stubbornness — surprise that 'he even says that openly!', sometimes with criticism.
Watch out
The key rule: this is stiff written language — news, articles, talk about someone — and it can't express your own good feelings like hope or thanks.
