〜ざる (~zaru) — un-~ / not ~ (classical negative before a noun)
The old 「ない」that sits before a noun — like a documentary, news or novel title.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A documentary title comes up on TV: 「知られざる日本の職人たち」— 'Japan's craftsmen that few people know about'.
Meaning
- 「ざる」is old Japanese for 'not', in the form that sits before a noun: 「知られざる」= 「知られていない」.
- The meaning is just 「ない」, but 「ざる」gives the serious, dramatic colour of a title, a news story or a novel — a feeling of something hidden that nobody has seen.
How to attach
- It attaches the same way: take the ない-form of the verb, drop 「ない」, add 「ざる」(知られない → 知られざる); する becomes 「せざる」(予期せざる).
- It mostly comes in ready-made pairs: 知られざる真実・見えざる力・招かれざる客 (an uninvited guest)・予期せざる事態 (an unforeseen situation)・絶えざる努力 (unceasing effort).
Versus what you know
N2It is the same 「ざる」as in 「ざるを得ない」(行かざるを得ない).
Watch out
- The key rule: a noun must always follow 「ざる」— you can't end a sentence with 「この話は知られざる。」
- And in everyday talk 「まだ食べざるケーキ」sounds strange — there 「まだ食べていないケーキ」is right.

This program shows the little-known hardships of foreigners working in Japan.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 知られる = to be known → ない-form: 知られない → we drop 「ない」: 知られ → we attach 「ざる」 = not known → a noun after: 苦労 = hardships.
工場で予期せざる事故が起き、生産が一週間止まった。
こうじょうでよきせざるじこがおき、せいさんがいっしゅうかんとまった。
An unforeseen accident happened at the factory, and production stopped for a week.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 予期する = to foresee → it's a する verb, so 「せ」: 予期せ → 「ざる」= not foreseen → a noun after: 事故 = accident → news style.
パーティーの最中に、招かれざる客が突然現れた。
パーティーのさいちゅうに、まねかれざるきゃくがとつぜんあらわれた。

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 招かれる = to be invited → ない-form: 招かれない → we drop 「ない」 → 「ざる」= not invited → a noun after: 客 = guest → 招かれざる客 is a set phrase.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「大地震という予期__事態に、町は混乱した。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What did する become in N2's 「ざるを得ない」?
する → せざる (as in せざるを得ない). 予期せざる事態 = an unforeseen situation.
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: What must follow 「ざる」?
「ざる」only comes before a noun; it can't end a sentence. For 'still not known' say 「まだ知られていない」.
Which is closest in meaning to 「知られざる真実」?
💡 Hint: ざる = ない. The 'must' of 「ざるを得ない」comes from 「を得ない」, not from 「ざる」.
知られざる = 知られていない = not widely known. It has no 'must know' or 'should be known' meaning.
