〜ずして (~zu shite) — without ~ing (classical)
An even older 「ずに」— alive in proverbs, speeches and a few set news phrases.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A sports news item: 「相手チームが棄権し、我がチームは戦わずして勝った」— 'The other team withdrew, so our team won without playing.'
Meaning
- 「ずして」= 「〜しないで」「〜ずに」— an even older, stiffer form of the 「ずに」you learned at N3.
- Usually a conclusion follows: 'without doing that, … is impossible / hard' — 「努力せずして成功はない」.
How to attach
- To attach: take the ない-form, drop 「ない」, add 「ずして」(戦わない → 戦わずして); する becomes 「せずして」.
- 「ずに」is still normal in writing today, but 「ずして」survives only in proverbs, speeches, essays and a few set news phrases: 戦わずして (without fighting)・労せずして (without effort)・期せずして (without expecting it, by chance — common in the news)・努力せずして (without trying).
Versus what you know
- It sounds like the 「なくして」you learned earlier, but there is a difference: 「なくして」comes after a noun (努力なくして), 「ずして」after a verb (努力せずして).
- 「ずとも」means 'even without' (言わずとも分かる) — a different meaning altogether.
Watch out
The key rule: it is not for small everyday actions — say 「朝ご飯を食べずして家を出た」and it sounds like a line from an old war story; use 「食べずに」or 「食べないで」there.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
会議では、期せずして全員が同じ案に賛成した。
かいぎでは、きせずしてぜんいんがおなじあんにさんせいした。
At the meeting, quite unexpectedly, everyone agreed on the same proposal.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 期する = to expect in advance → it's a する verb, so 「せ」: 期せ → 「ずして」= without expecting it, by chance → then what happened: 全員が賛成した.
労せずして大金を得ようとする人は、詐欺にだまされやすい。
ろうせずしてたいきんをえようとするひとは、さぎにだまされやすい。
People who try to make a lot of money without effort are easily fooled by scams.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 労する = to work hard → it's a する verb, so 「せ」: 労せ → 「ずして」= without working hard → 大金を得ようとする = to try to make a lot of money → such people fall for 詐欺 (scams).
日本語を学ばずして、日本の職場で信頼を得るのは難しい。
にほんごをまなばずして、にほんのしょくばでしんらいをえるのはむずかしい。
Without learning Japanese, it is hard to win trust in a Japanese workplace.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 学ぶ = to learn → ない-form: 学ばない → we drop 「ない」: 学ば → 「ずして」= without learning → then the conclusion: 信頼を得るのは難しい = it's hard to win trust.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「相手チームが棄権したため、我がチームは戦わ__勝った。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「ない」has already been dropped from 「戦わ」.
Vない minus ない + ずして: 戦わずして = without fighting. 「ない」and 「ずして」never appear together, and 「ずにして」「ないでして」don't exist.
In which sentence is 「ずして」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Stiff old style — for a small everyday action?
ずして lives in proverbs, speeches and set news phrases. For skipping breakfast after oversleeping, say 「食べずに」or 「食べないで」.
「努力__成功はない。」— which option is wrong?
💡 Hint: 「努力」is a noun. Can 「ずして」attach to a noun directly?
「ずして」only follows a verb, so 努力 must become 努力せずして (する → せ). Straight after a noun use 「なくして」or 「なしに」— those three are fine; only 「努力ずして」is wrong.
