〜との (~to no) — (a message / report) that ~
The formal 「という」for the content of a message, notice or instruction.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
One morning at the factory the supervisor tells everyone: 「田中さんから、電車の事故で30分ほど遅れるとの連絡がありました」— 'We got word from Tanaka-san that he'll be about 30 minutes late because of a train accident.'
Meaning
- 「Aとの連絡」= 'a message saying A' — A is what the message says.
- At the end of a sentence, 「〜とのことです」means 'I'm told that ~' (hearsay).
How to attach
Attach it as plain-form sentence + 「との」+ N; with nouns and な-adjectives 「だ」is usually kept (中止だとの連絡), and an order or proposal can come straight in (すぐ戻れとの指示).
Versus what you know
- It means exactly the same as the 「遅れるという連絡」you already know; 「という」is everyday speech, 「との」is the formal word of offices, news and notices.
- N3Don't mix it up with N3 「友達との約束」, where 「と」means 'with' (a promise with a friend) — that's something else; here 「と」quotes words, so a whole sentence comes before it.
Watch out
The key rule: the noun after it must be a word for speech or information — 連絡・知らせ・報告・指示・返事・意見・うわさ. It doesn't fit a sound, smell or photo (×「ドアが開くとの音」).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
田中さんから、三十分ほど遅れるとの連絡がありました。
たなかさんから、さんじゅっぷんほどおくれるとのれんらくがありました。
We got word from Tanaka-san that they'll be about thirty minutes late.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 三十分ほど遅れる = I'll be about half an hour late (the content of the message) → 「との」= saying that → 連絡 = word, a message → 連絡がありました = word came.
台風のため、明日の工場は休みだとの知らせが届いた。
たいふうのため、あしたのこうじょうはやすみだとのしらせがとどいた。
A notice arrived saying the factory will be closed tomorrow because of the typhoon.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 台風のため = because of the typhoon → 工場は休みだ = the factory is closed (N + だ) → 「との」= saying that → 知らせが届いた = a notice arrived.
市役所から、書類を今月中に出すようにとの通知が来た。
しやくしょから、しょるいをこんげつちゅうにだすようにとのつうちがきた。
A notice came from the city office telling me to submit the documents within this month.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 書類を今月中に出すように = submit the documents within this month (an instruction) → 「との」= saying that → 通知 = an official notice → 通知が来た = a notice came.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「明日の会議は中止__との連絡が来た。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What goes between a noun and 「との」?
N + だ + との + N. 中止だとの連絡 = a message saying it's cancelled. 「な」「の」「に」don't fit here.
In which sentence is 「との」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is the noun after it a message, or a sound?
との is followed only by a word for speech or information like メール・指示・知らせ. For a sound, say 「ドアが開く音がした」.
In which sentence does 「との」mean 'saying that' (message content)?
💡 Hint: Is there a whole sentence before it, or just a person?
延長するとの返事 = a reply saying they'll extend it — a whole sentence comes before. In the other three, 「との」means 'with' (友達との約束 = a promise with a friend).
