〜より (~yori) — from (formal から)
The formal から — the notice word for a starting time, a place, or a sender.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
At the station you hear 「まもなく、3番線より快速電車が発車いたします」, and a shop poster says 「セールは午前10時より」.
Meaning
- You've known 「より」since N5 as 'than' (東京は大阪より大きい), but in notices and announcements it is the formal 「から」— 'from'.
- It shows up in three places: a starting time (午後1時より開始), a departure point (2番線より発車), and a sender — at the end of a letter or message, 「店長より」(from the manager).
How to attach
Attach it as N + 「より」.
Versus what you know
Just as 「にて」above is the formal 「で」, 「より」is the formal 「から」.
Watch out
- The key rule: it only marks a starting point or source — the reason 「から」(雨が降ったから) can never become 「より」.
- And to a friend, 「明日は9時より始まるよ」sounds oddly stiff; in speech, stay with 「から」.
Also
How do you tell 'than' from 'from'? If a verb of starting or moving follows (始まる・発車する・届く), it's 'from'; if an adjective like 大きい・多い follows, it's 'than'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
面接は、午後一時より本社三階で行います。
めんせつは、ごごいちじよりほんしゃさんかいでおこないます。
The interview will be held from 1 p.m. on the third floor of the head office.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 午後一時 = 1 p.m. (the start time) → we attach 「より」 instead of 「から」 → then the notice: 本社三階で行います = will be held on the third floor of the head office.
まもなく、二番線より東京行きの電車が発車いたします。
まもなく、にばんせんよりとうきょういきのでんしゃがはっしゃいたします。
The train for Tokyo will shortly depart from platform 2.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 二番線 = platform 2 (a place) → 「より」= "from" → then 発車いたします = departs (a verb of movement, so it means "from", not "than").
本日、大家さんより水道工事のお知らせが届きました。
ほんじつ、おおやさんよりすいどうこうじのおしらせがとどきました。
Today a notice about water-pipe work arrived from the landlord.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 大家さん = the landlord (the sender) → 「より」= "from" → then お知らせが届きました = a notice arrived.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「健康診断の受付は、午前八時半__開始いたします。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A starting time, in a formal notice.
N + より = formal から. 八時半より開始 = starting from 8:30. 「まで」('until') clashes with 開始, and 「において」「にとって」don't mark a time.
In which sentence is 「より」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A starting point, or a reason?
より only marks a starting time, place or sender. For the reason 'because it rained' you need 「雨が降ったから」(or 「雨のため」).
In which sentence does 「より」mean 'from' (not 'than')?
💡 Hint: Is it followed by an adjective, or a verb of starting?
十時より始まります — 「始まる」(a verb of starting) follows, so it's 'from ten'. The other three end in comparison words (多い・簡単・暑い), so their より is 'than'.
