    〜意向を示した (~ikō o shimeshita) — indicated an intention to ~

News that a politician, mayor, company head or athlete has publicly said 'I intend to do ~'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    V辞書形/Vない + 意向を示した

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • After a press conference the news says: 「知事は、次の選挙には立候補しない意向を示した」— 'the governor indicated he will not run in the next election'.
    • It is common in news on politics, athletes retiring (現役を引退する意向) and company deals; and at work too you will meet the word 「意向」in emails like 「お客様のご意向を確認します」(we will check the client's wishes).

    Meaning

    • 「意向」= one's wish and intention, 「示す」= to show; so 'showed everyone what they intend'.
    • It is exactly the news version of someone else's 「つもり」: the governor himself says 「出ないつもりです」, and the news writes 「立候補しない意向を示した」.

    How to attach

    • Attach it straight to a verb's dictionary or ない form (続ける意向・立候補しない意向).
    • To make it sound more like a plan or opinion than a wish, the news also says 「〜考えを示した」.

    Versus what you know

The previous point's 「方針を固めた」is a firm decision inside an organisation; 「意向を示した」is only a person's (or organisation's) stated wish — nothing formally decided, and it can still change.

    Watch out

The key rule: what comes in front must be something the subject will do by their own will — not a forecast like 'a typhoon will come', nor a judgement about how things are (that is the next point's 「との見方」).
