〜模様だ (~moyō da) — it appears that ~ (news, not yet confirmed)
The news version of 「ようだ」— from the reports coming in, this is how things look right now, but it isn't confirmed yet.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On the evening of a train accident the NHK news says: 「脱線した電車の乗客は、全員無事の模様です」.
- You will hear it every day in reports on typhoons, earthquakes, stopped trains and police cases.
Meaning
- The reporter hasn't met every passenger to confirm it; from the information coming from the scene, 'so far this is how it looks' — that 'not yet confirmed' feeling is what 「〜模様だ」gives.
- 「模様」at root means 'the scene, the state of things', so read it as 'judging by the state of things, it is like this'.
How to attach
Attach it straight to the plain form of a verb or い-adj (続いている模様・逃げた模様), and after a noun put 「の」(無事の模様).
Versus what you know
- N3「〜ようだ」and 「〜らしい」mean exactly the same, but they are everyday words; 「模様だ」is the word of TV news, radio and newspapers.
- It is also close to 「〜とみられる」from L23, but that is an estimate the police or experts make from evidence (a cause, a damage figure); 「模様だ」reports how things stand at the scene right now.
Watch out
The key rule: it is reporting language — nobody uses it for their own plans or feelings, or when chatting with a friend; there 「みたい」or 「らしい」is right.
Also
For a forecast about the future, the next point's 「見通し」is used.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
台風の影響で、沖縄県では今も約二万戸で停電が続いている模様です。
たいふうのえいきょうで、おきなわけんではいまもやくにまんこでていでんがつづいているもようです。
Because of the typhoon, power outages appear to be continuing at about 20,000 homes in Okinawa.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 停電が続いている = the power outage is continuing (plain form) → attach 「模様です」 directly = going by on-the-scene information, it appears so → the figures aren't confirmed yet, so the reporter used 「模様」.
脱線した電車の乗客は、全員無事の模様です。
だっせんしたでんしゃのじょうきゃくは、ぜんいんぶじのもようです。
All the passengers on the derailed train appear to be safe.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 全員無事 = all safe (a noun) → we attach 「の」: 全員無事の → 「模様です」= this is how it looks from the information so far; not fully confirmed.
調べによると、男は同じ手口で十件以上の盗みを繰り返していた模様です。
しらべによると、おとこはおなじてぐちでじゅうけんいじょうのぬすみをくりかえしていたもようです。
According to the investigation, the man appears to have committed more than ten thefts using the same method.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 繰り返していた = had been repeating (past plain form) → attach 「模様です」 directly → "the investigation so far points to this" — not confirmed by a court.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「地震のあと、駅の周辺は今も大混乱__模様です。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 大混乱 is a noun.
N + の + 模様だ: 大混乱の模様です = it appears to be in great confusion. 「な」, 「だ」and 「に」don't attach before 模様.
In which sentence is 「模様」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A news report, or your own plan told to a friend?
模様だ reports a situation in the news. For your own plan told to a friend, say 「私も行くよ」or 「行くつもり」.
Chatting with a friend, which is most natural for 'looks like there was an accident in front of the station'?
💡 Hint: The everyday-speech 'looks like'.
In chat use 「みたい」or 「らしい」. 「模様だ」is a newsreader's word and sounds odd with a friend; 「事故の模様があった」and 「あったの模様」are simply ungrammatical.
