〜見通しだ (~mitōshi da) — is expected / projected to ~
The news forecast: looking at the data and the present situation, 'this is where things are heading'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- When heavy rain stops the trains, the station screen and the TV say: 「運転再開は夕方になる見通しです」— 'trains are expected to resume in the evening'.
- It appears constantly in news with numbers — weather, typhoons, the economy, company profits, visa figures — especially as 「〜に達する見通し」(expected to reach ~).
Meaning
「見通す」means 'to see far ahead', so 「〜見通しだ」carries a forecast: looking at the present situation and the data, 'this is what will happen'.
How to attach
- Attach it straight to the dictionary or ない form of a verb (なる見通し・止まらない見通し), and after a noun use 「の」(年内完成の見通し).
- When a forecast changes into a new one, the news says 「〜見通しとなった」.
Versus what you know
- The previous point's 「模様だ」guesses about now or about what has happened; 「見通しだ」is always about the days ahead.
- N4It also differs from the 「予定だ」: 予定 = a schedule already fixed, 見通し = not fixed, only projected.
Watch out
The key rule: it is not used with something already finished (Vた), nor for your own small plans — for those say 「予定」or 「つもり」.
Also
If the station shows 「運転再開の見通しは立っていません」, read it as 'there is not even an estimate of when trains will run' — time to look for a hotel or a bus!

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「新しい駅ビルは、再来年の春に完成__見通しだ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A future event — the verb's dictionary form.
Dictionary form + 見通しだ: 完成する見通し = expected to be completed. 「した」is already done, 「しよう」is one's own will, and 「して」doesn't attach here.
In which sentence is 「見通し」unnatural?
💡 Hint: 見通し is always about which time?
見通し = a forecast about the future. It can't be used for something that already happened yesterday; say 「上陸した」, or 「上陸した模様だ」if unconfirmed.
In the news, which says 'trains are expected to resume in the afternoon'?
💡 Hint: A forecast, and the subject is not a person.
A forecast = 見通し. 「なった模様」is about something already done; 構え and 意向 are the stance or wish of a person or organisation, not of an event like 運転再開.
