〜もさることながら (~mo saru koto nagara) — ~ of course, but even more ~
'A matters, of course — but the main point is B' — formal language of reviews and speeches.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A restaurant review: 「この店は、味もさることながら、店員の笑顔がいい」— 'the taste is good, of course, but even better are the staff's smiles'.
- Formal language: speeches, reviews, interviews, essays.
Meaning
- 「AもさることながらB」= A is important or good too, everyone knows that — but the main thing I want to say is B.
- Mostly for good evaluations, sometimes for a list of problems (費用もさることながら手続きが大変).
How to attach
N + 「もさることながら」, and B usually takes 「が」or 「も」
Versus what you know
- N2「〜はもとより」and N3's 「〜はもちろん」mean 'A of course, and B too' — A and B are roughly equal; with 「もさることながら」the weight falls on B.
- The previous point, 「はおろか」, says 'not even the small thing' about a bad situation.
Watch out
A verb cannot attach directly — 「話すもさることながら」✗; if you need one, make it a noun like 「話すこともさることながら」.
