〜に限ったことではない (~ni kagitta koto de wa nai) — not just ~ (it's a general thing)
'This is not just a ~ problem' — the reply when one place or person gets all the blame.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A friend complains 「日本の若い人って、敬語が下手だよね」.
- You answer 「それは日本に限ったことじゃないよ。ネパールでも同じだよ」— 'that's not just Japan'.
- It is mostly about problems or bad habits (人手不足、遅刻、物価高).
Meaning
- 「〜に限ったことではない」is the reply when someone points at one place, time or person: 'no, this is wider than that — it's a general thing'.
- It usually comes at the end of the sentence and corrects the claim itself.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun: 「〜のは、Nに限ったことではない」
- To keep the sentence going: 「〜に限ったことではなく、…」
- In writing and the news 「ではない」, in speech 「じゃない」
Versus what you know
- N2「〜に限らず」sits in the middle of a sentence: 'not only A, but B too…'.
- The previous point, 「にとどまらず」, describes something that spread; this one gives a view: 'this is common'.
Watch out
Don't confuse it with 「〜に限って」(of all times, bad luck) — that one stresses 'that one case', the opposite.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
人手不足は、介護の仕事に限ったことではない。
ひとでふそくは、かいごのしごとにかぎったことではない。
The labor shortage is not just a problem in care work.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 人手不足 = labor shortage (the problem) → 介護の仕事 = care work (one field) → 「に限ったことではない」 → 'it exists in other fields too'.
電車の遅れは今日に限ったことではなく、毎朝のことだ。
でんしゃのおくれはきょうにかぎったことではなく、まいあさのことだ。
The train delays aren't just a today thing — they happen every morning.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 電車の遅れ = train delays → 今日 = today (one point in time) → 「に限ったことではなく」 (the form that keeps the sentence going) → 毎朝のことだ = it's an every-morning thing.
日本語の敬語が難しいと感じるのは、外国人に限ったことではない。
にほんごのけいごがむずかしいとかんじるのは、がいこくじんにかぎったことではない。
It's not only foreigners who find Japanese keigo difficult.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 敬語が難しいと感じる = to find keigo difficult → 「のは」 → 外国人 = foreigners → 「に限ったことではない」 → 'Japanese people find it hard too'.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「ごみの問題は、この町に_ことではない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which form comes before 「こと」?
N + に限ったことではない — 「限った」(た-form) + こと.
In which sentence is 「に限ったことではない」unnatural?
💡 Hint: After 'not just today', can you say 'today is the first time'?
「今日に限ったことではない」= it happened on other days too, so 'today is the first time' contradicts it.
「いつもは空いているのに、急いでいる日_電車が遅れる。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Bad luck: 'on that very day, of all days'.
「に限って」= of all times (bad luck). 「に限ったことではない」is the opposite: 'not just that one, it's general'.
