〜といったところだ (~to itta tokoro da) — at most ~ / about ~ (not much)
A modest 'about' that says the number or level is small — 'this much at most, not more'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A new friend asks 「毎日どのくらい日本語を勉強してるの?」
- You answer, a little shyly, 「せいぜい30分といったところかな」— 'about 30 minutes at most, not much'.
Meaning
- 「〜といったところだ」= the number or level is small and goes no higher — 'not much, just this'.
- So 「せいぜい」「多くても」「まだ」often come before it.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun, usually a number: 20分といったところだ
- After a verb, dictionary form: あいさつができるといったところだ = 'only at the level of greeting'
- 「というところだ」means the same
- Polite form: 「〜といったところです/でしょうか」
Versus what you know
N3「くらい・ぐらい」also means 'about', but it is neutral — you can say 「1000人ぐらい」.
Watch out
It does not work with big numbers or boasting — 「年収は1億円といったところだ」sounds strange.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
通勤時間は、せいぜい20分といったところです。
つうきんじかんは、せいぜい20ふんといったところです。
My commute takes about 20 minutes at most.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 通勤時間 = commuting time → せいぜい = at most → 20分 (a small number) → attach 「といったところです」 directly → the feeling 'not much, only about this'.
私の日本語は、まだ簡単なあいさつができるといったところです。
わたしのにほんごは、まだかんたんなあいさつができるといったところです。
My Japanese is still only at the level of simple greetings.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) まだ = still → あいさつができる = can greet (dictionary form) → attach 「といったところです」 → saying 'only up to that level', we humbly play down our own level.
この店の客は、平日は多くても一日30人といったところだ。
このみせのきゃくは、へいじつはおおくてもいちにち30にんといったところだ。
On weekdays this shop gets about 30 customers a day at the most.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 平日 = weekdays → 多くても = even at most → 一日30人 (a number) → 「といったところだ」 → the feeling 'not many come'.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「通勤は、自転車で_。」— which attachment is correct?
💡 Hint: Does anything go between the number (N) and the form?
N + といったところだ — nothing (の・な・だ) goes in between. 15分といったところです = about 15 minutes at most.
In which sentence is 「といったところだ」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is the number small, or big and surprising?
「といったところだ」is only for a small number or level. 「なんと1億円」is big and surprising, so it does not fit.
「お客さんは一日20人といったところだ。」— what does the speaker feel?
💡 Hint: What does it add on top of 「くらい」?
「くらい」is a neutral 'about'; 「といったところだ」= 'about this much, not a lot'.
