〜くらいのものだ (~kurai no mono da) — only ~ (does that) / about the only one
'The only one who does that is ~' — a spoken way to point to the one person or thing.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- At the office everyone goes home on time, but one person always stays until 10 p.m.
- A colleague says 「こんな時間まで残ってるのは、部長くらいのものだよ」— 'the only one who stays this late is the manager'.
Meaning
- 「〜くらいのものだ」= 'the only one who does or is like this is ~, nobody else'.
- The meaning is like 「しか〜ない」, but softer and more spoken — sometimes praise, sometimes a light complaint.
How to attach
- Usual pattern 「〜のは、Nくらいのものだ」: first the action or situation with 「のは」, then the single person or thing at the end
- Both くらい and ぐらい work; 「なものだ」can replace 「のものだ」
- With a verb, dictionary form: 話を聞くくらいのものだ = 'all I can do is listen'
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「くらい」for 'about' or 'at least'; here the same くらい joins 「のものだ」at the end and becomes 'only'.
- The previous point, 「といったところだ」, says an amount is small; this one says 'that one only'.
Watch out
It clashes with words like 'everyone' or 'many people' — 'only' and 'all' cannot go together.
