〜をおいてほかに〜ない (~o oite hoka ni ~nai) — no one / nothing other than ~ (~ is the best)
High praise: 'for this, ~ is the one — there is no one else'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Your company is opening a new branch in Nepal. The boss says 「ラムさんをおいてほかに、この仕事を任せられる人はいない」— 'there is no one but Ram-san we can trust with this'.
- It is formal language.
Meaning
- 「〜をおいてほかに〜ない」is high praise: ~ is the best fit, and nobody or nothing else comes close.
- It is only ever used for a high evaluation.
How to attach
- N + 「をおいてほかに」, and the sentence must end in a negative: 「いない」「ない」「考えられない」
- Sometimes 「ほかに」is dropped: 「Nをおいて適任者はいない」
Versus what you know
- The previous point, 「くらいのものだ」, also says 'only one', but it works for complaints too.
- N2Do not confuse it with 「において」(in / at a place or field) — here it is 「を」+「おいて」.
- 「を除いて」(except ~, a plain exception) is different too: it carries no praise.
Watch out
It is never used for something bad — 「遅刻するのは彼をおいてほかにいない」is wrong; say 「彼くらいのものだ」there.
There is no one but Ram-san we can trust with the new branch.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ラムさん = the person being praised → attach 「をおいてほかに」 → 支店を任せられる人 = a person we can trust with the branch → 「いない」 at the end → 'he is the only suitable one'.
If you want Nepali food, there is no place like this restaurant.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 食べるなら = if you're going to eat → この店 = this restaurant (highly rated) → 「をおいてほかに」 → since it's a place, 「ない」 not 「いない」 → 'this is the best'.
We cannot imagine anyone but Kimura-san as the next president.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 木村さん = the person being praised → 「をおいてほかに」 → 次の社長 = the next president → 「考えられない」 at the end (can't even imagine) → 'the only one qualified'.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「ほかにいない」follows.
N + をおいてほかに〜ない = no one other than ~. Do not mix it up with 「において」(place).
In which sentence is 「をおいて」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Praise, or something bad?
「をおいて」is only for high evaluation. For a bad habit like being late, say 「彼くらいのものだ」.
— which gives a plain exception?
💡 Hint: No praise here — just 'except Monday'.
「を除いて」= a plain exception. 「をおいて」needs praise and a negative ending (〜ない).
