    〜というか〜というか (~to iu ka ~to iu ka) — ~, or should I say ~

When one word can't hold the feeling — 'how do I put it… this, or maybe that.'

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    い-adj/な-adj/N/V普通形 + というか + い-adj/な-adj/N/V普通形 + というか、…

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Your last day at a company after five years. A friend asks how it feels, and you say: 「ほっとしたというか寂しいというか、不思議な気分だ。」— relieved, or should I say sad — one word isn't enough.
    • It belongs to conversation and essays.

    Meaning

    • With 「〜というか〜というか」the speaker is searching for the right word, puts two side by side and means 'each is half true.'
    • Neither wins; both stay, and a summary follows: 「複雑な気持ちだ」「とにかく〜」「あきれた」.
    • It usually carries mixed feelings, surprise or criticism.

    How to attach

    • Directly on い-adj, な-adj and nouns: うれしいというか・無責任というか
    • A verb in plain form works too: ほっとしたというか

    Versus what you know

    • N3You met a single 「〜というか」— 「先生というか、友達みたいな人」— where the first word is corrected and the second chosen.
    • 「といい〜といい」counts two aspects of one thing (taste, price); this one hunts for the right name for one feeling or person.

    Watch out

    It cannot list objects (パンというか牛乳というかを買った).

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    五年働いた会社を辞めた。ほっとしたというか寂しいというか、不思議な気分だ。

    ごねんはたらいたかいしゃをやめた。ほっとしたというかさびしいというか、ふしぎなきぶんだ。

I left the company I'd worked at for five years. Relieved, or should I say lonely — it's a strange feeling.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ほっとした = felt relieved, 寂しい = lonely (two opposite feelings) → 「というか」 after both → then a summary: 不思議な気分だ = a strange feeling.

    連絡もしないで休むなんて、無責任というかのんきというか、あきれた。

    れんらくもしないでやすむなんて、むせきにんというかのんきというか、あきれた。

Taking the day off without even calling? Irresponsible, or just carefree — I'm speechless.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 無責任 = irresponsible, のんき = carefree (both な-adj, without 「な」) → 「というか」 twice → then criticism: あきれた = I'm dumbfounded.

    あの先輩は、器用というか要領がいいというか、仕事が早い。

    あのせんぱいは、きようというかようりょうがいいというか、しごとがはやい。

That senior is skillful, or maybe just smart about it — either way, they work fast.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 器用 = skillful with one's hands, 要領がいい = knows the knack of working → searching for the right word, 「というか」 after both → then the summary: 仕事が早い.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「友達は落ちて、私だけ合格した。_悲しいというか、複雑な気持ちだ。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: Keep the い-adjective as it is and attach.
