When to use it

Breakfast at a Japanese inn: rice, miso soup, grilled fish.
Japanese people say: 「朝ごはんは、やっぱりごはんにお味噌汁だね」.

Meaning

Here 「に」is not a place — it adds one thing to another to make 'a pair, a set that always goes together'.
It paints 'they belong together, this is the classic match' — food and drink, clothes that go together, a tool and what it's for (スパゲッティにフォーク、うどんにお箸).

How to attach

N + に + N, simple as that.
What follows is often 「〜が定番だ」「〜が一番だ」「〜でしょう」or a description of an outfit.

Versus what you know

N5「と」(ごはんとお味噌汁) just lists two items.

Watch out

The two things must really go together naturally; put in a mismatched pair (× ラーメンにシャンプー) and it makes no sense.

Also

A related form is 「〜に〜を重ねて」(努力に努力を重ねて = effort piled on effort) — that is not a pair, though; it means 'to the limit', like 「考えに考えて」in the previous point.

Breakfast at the dorm is grilled fish with miso soup every day.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 焼き魚 = grilled fish → 「に」 → お味噌汁 = miso soup → a set that goes together: 焼き魚にお味噌汁 → 「だ」.

面接には、白いシャツに紺のスーツで行くのが無難だ。

めんせつには、しろいシャツにこんのスーツでいくのがぶなんだ。

For an interview, a white shirt with a navy suit is the safe choice.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 白いシャツ = white shirt → 「に」 → 紺のスーツ = navy suit → clothes that go together → 「で行くのが無難だ」 = going like that is the safe choice.

夏の夜は、冷たいビールに枝豆が一番だ。

なつのよるは、つめたいビールにえだまめがいちばんだ。

On a summer night, nothing beats cold beer with edamame.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 冷たいビール = cold beer → 「に」 → 枝豆 = boiled green soybeans → the perfect pair → 「が一番だ」.
