Grow with Kitty

Type in Japanese, kana, romaji or English. Every word and grammar point from N5 to N1.

    N という N (N to iu N) — every single N / (this time) for sure

N2's 'every N', plus the N1 twist: 今日という今日・今度という今度 = 'this time, for sure'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N + という + N (同じN)

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • At N1 you meet it even more in news and writing: a flood report says 「家という家が水につかった」— a far stronger picture than 'all the houses flooded'.
    • To a colleague who keeps coming in late: 「今日という今日は、はっきり言うぞ」.

    Meaning

    • The same noun twice with 「という」between = 'every N, not one left out'.
    • The new N1 part is with time words: 「今日という今日は」「今度という今度は」.
    • This does not mean 'all of today' — it means 'I've put up with it so many times, but today, for sure / this time, definitely!', the dam of patience breaking.
    • Plain 「今日は」is an ordinary sentence; 「今日という今日は」speaks with anger or firm resolve.

    How to attach

    • N + という + the same N
    • With time, only fixed words like 今日 and 今度 are used
    • What follows is usually 〜なければ・〜てみせる・もう許さない・はっきり言う.

    Versus what you know

    • N2You learned 「店という店が閉まっていた」— 'every single shop'.
    • N3Put a different noun (田中という人) and you get the 'called' meaning.

    Watch out

It doesn't go with counting (× 三軒の店という店).

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    大雨で川があふれ、町の道路という道路が水につかった。

    おおあめでかわがあふれ、まちのどうろというどうろがみずにつかった。

Heavy rain made the river overflow, and every single road in town went under water.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 道路 = road → 「という」 → the same 道路 again → 道路という道路 = every road, without missing a single one → then what happened to all of them: 水につかった (went under water).

    今度という今度は、絶対にたばこをやめてみせる。

    こんどというこんどは、ぜったいにたばこをやめてみせる。

This time, for sure, I'm going to quit smoking — just watch.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今度 = this time → 「という」 → 今度 again +「は」 → 'I've failed many times, but this time for sure' → then the resolution: 〜てみせる.

    遅刻ばかりする後輩に、今日という今日ははっきり注意した。

    ちこくばかりするこうはいに、きょうというきょうははっきりちゅういした。

Today, at long last, I gave my junior coworker who's always late a clear warning.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今日 = today → 「という」 → 今日 again +「は」 → 'I've put up with it long enough; today for sure' → then what I did: はっきり注意した (gave a clear warning).

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「台風で、この辺りの家___家の屋根が飛ばされた。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: The same N twice — 'every'.
