〜はどうあれ (~wa dō are) — whatever ~ may be / however ~ turns out
'However that turns out, my view — or this fact — stays the same.' A way to state where you stand.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You walk out of the JLPT. A friend asks how it went.
- You say: 'Whatever the result, I did my best — no regrets.'
- It is also used in speech.
Meaning
- 「〜はどうあれ」= 'however that turns out, my view or this fact stays the same'.
- What follows is usually your own opinion, stance or judgement.
How to attach
- Noun + 「は」+ 「どうあれ」: 結果はどうあれ・理由はどうあれ
- 「どうであれ」is said with the same meaning
- The noun is usually something whose state can vary: 結果・理由・形・事情・見た目.
Versus what you know
- The earlier 「いかんにかかわらず・いかんを問わず」were stiff rule-and-notice language.
- N2「〜はともかく・〜はさておき」push the topic aside — 'let's leave that for now'; 「はどうあれ」does not — it says 'however that is, the outcome does not change'.
Watch out
You may be tempted to use 「何」, but 「結果は何あれ」is wrong — it must be 「どう」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
結果はどうあれ、最後まで全力を尽くしたことに意味がある。
けっかはどうあれ、さいごまでぜんりょくをつくしたことにいみがある。
Whatever the result, giving it everything to the very end means something.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 結果 = result (good or bad) → 「は」 → 「どうあれ」 = whatever it is → then the speaker's own view: 意味がある (it means something).
理由はどうあれ、約束の時間に遅れたのは君が悪い。
りゆうはどうあれ、やくそくのじかんにおくれたのはきみがわるい。
Whatever your reason, being late for the time we agreed on is your fault.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 理由 = reason (whatever it may be) → 「は」 → 「どうあれ」 → then the speaker's judgment: 君が悪い (it's your fault) — in an argument with a friend.
形はどうあれ、日本で働く夢がかなったのだから満足だ。
かたちはどうあれ、にほんではたらくゆめがかなったのだからまんぞくだ。
However it came about, my dream of working in Japan came true, so I'm satisfied.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 形 = form, the way it happened (not as imagined) → 「は」 → 「どうあれ」 → then the speaker's own feeling: 満足だ (I'm satisfied).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「結果は___、試験が終わってほっとした。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「何」or 「どう」?
N + は + どうあれ. 「何あれ」and 「どうなれ」do not exist as this pattern.
Which sentence is natural?
💡 Hint: Is what follows actually connected to the noun (見た目)?
After はどうあれ comes your view or judgement about the same matter: whatever it looks like, it tastes great. The others have no connection.
What is the difference between 「冗談はさておき」and 「結果はどうあれ」?
💡 Hint: One pushes the topic aside; what does the other do?
はさておき = let's set that aside (change topic). はどうあれ = however that is, the conclusion or view stays the same.
