Doing something without thinking of what one normally must — one's own safety, or the trouble caused to others. News language.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On the news: 'Heedless of the danger to himself, a man rescued a child who had fallen into the river.'
- Another story: 'Young people making loud noise late at night, with no regard for the trouble to neighbours.'
- It is stiff, written language — news and articles.
Meaning
- Both carry the feeling 'without thinking of what one normally must' — that is 「〜を顧みず」(「顧みる」= to look back on, to give thought to).
- With 「危険を顧みず」it praises bravery; with 「迷惑を顧みず」「家庭を顧みず」it criticises.
- Its heart is 'not thinking of what one should care about — one's own safety, one's family, the effect on others'.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun: 危険を顧みず; with 「も」, 「〜も顧みず」is also said
- The noun is usually 危険・身の安全・家族・家庭・周囲の迷惑・健康.
Versus what you know
- In this lesson, 「をものともせず」was courage to overcome a big obstacle (always praise), and 「をよそに」was ignoring others' feelings.
- N2It is 'not caring' like 「〜もかまわず」, but much stiffer and written.
Watch out
You will not hear it for small daily things (× 時間を顧みず) or in chat with friends.
