    〜をよそに (~o yoso ni) — ignoring ~ / paying no heed to ~

Everyone around is worried or protesting — but they go their own way, as if it had nothing to do with them.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + をよそに、…
    Verb・い-adj V普通形/い-adj + の + をよそに、…

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Your parents are worried: 'Don't quit your job at a good company.' But your younger brother quits and opens his own shop.
    • It appears more in writing.

    Meaning

    • 「〜をよそに」= 'ignoring the worry, hopes or protests around them as if they were someone else's business' (「よそ」= somewhere else, not yours).
    • It is not an obstacle but other people's feelings or the surrounding situation — 親の心配・周囲の期待・住民の反対・不景気.
    • The tone is sometimes 'what a person!' (exasperation), sometimes 'wow!' (amazement).

    How to attach

    • Straight after a noun: 心配をよそに
    • After a clause, add 「の」: 物価が上がっているのをよそに

    Versus what you know

    • In the previous point, 「をものともせず」, there was a big obstacle and praise for courage.
    • N2「〜もかまわず」(人目もかまわず) also means 'not caring', but usually about something small right in front of you (people's eyes, noise); 「をよそに」is about ignoring others' deep feelings or a big social situation.

    Watch out

It is said about others — nobody says 「私は親の心配をよそに…」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    親の心配をよそに、弟は会社を辞めて自分の店を始めた。

    おやのしんぱいをよそに、おとうとはかいしゃをやめてじぶんのみせをはじめた。

Paying no heed to our parents' worries, my younger brother quit his job at the company and started his own shop.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 親の心配 = parents' worry → 「をよそに」 = acting as if it had nothing to do with him → then what the brother did: 会社を辞めて店を始めた.

    周りの期待をよそに、彼は結局試験を受けなかった。

    まわりのきたいをよそに、かれはけっきょくしけんをうけなかった。

Ignoring everyone's expectations, he never took the exam in the end.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 周りの期待 = the expectations of those around him → 「をよそに」 → then an act opposite to those expectations: 試験を受けなかった (didn't even take the exam) — a tone of frustration.

    物価が上がっているのをよそに、この店は十年間値段を変えていない。

    ぶっかがあがっているのをよそに、このみせはじゅうねんかんねだんをかえていない。

Paying no heed to rising prices, this shop hasn't changed its prices in ten years.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 物価が上がっている = prices are rising → it's a clause, so add 「の」 → 「をよそに」 → then a surprising fact: 値段を変えていない — here the tone is 'wow!'.
