〜ながらに (~nagara ni) — while (still) in the state of ~

Something happens while a state stays just as it is — with only a few set words.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + ながらに
    Verb Vます [ます] + ながらに

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • On the news, a woman who lost her family in an accident is speaking without being able to stop her tears, and the report says: 「涙ながらに語った」.
    • The style is somewhat formal and written — heard mostly in news, speeches and articles.

    Meaning

    • 'In a state of tears' — she spoke while the tears kept falling, staying in that state.
    • 「〜ながらに」= 'with a state unchanged, just as it is'.
    • It attaches to very few words, so learn them as a set: 涙ながらに (in tears), 生まれながらに (from birth).

    How to attach

    • Directly to a noun: 涙ながらに
    • To a verb's ます-form with 「ます」dropped: 生まれ + ながらに
    • 「ながらにして」(家にいながらにして = without leaving home) and 「ながらの N」before a noun (昔ながらの味 = the taste it has always had) belong to the same family.

    Versus what you know

    • N3You learned two ながら: 「音楽を聞きながら勉強する」(two actions at once) and 「狭いながらも」(although).
    • N2There was also the polite opener 「残念ながら」.
    • This ながらに is different from all three: not two actions, not 'but' — only 'with that state unchanged'.

    Watch out

You cannot attach it to any verb you like — 「テレビを見ながらにご飯を食べた」is wrong; for two actions at once, use plain 「ながら」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    事故で家族を失った女性が、涙ながらに当時の様子を語った。

    じこでかぞくをうしなったじょせいが、なみだながらにとうじのようすをかたった。

A woman who lost her family in the accident described, in tears, what happened that day.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 涙 = tears (a noun) → attach 「ながらに」 directly: 涙ながらに = with tears falling → then 語った (she told) — news style.

    兄は生まれながらに体が弱く、よく学校を休んでいた。

    あにはうまれながらにからだがよわく、よくがっこうをやすんでいた。

My older brother was weak from birth and often missed school.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 生まれる = to be born → ます-form: 生まれます → drop 「ます」: 生まれ → 「ながらに」 = in the state he was in from birth → then 体が弱く (a weak body).

    ネットのおかげで、日本にいながらにして故郷のニュースが見られる。

    ネットのおかげで、にほんにいながらにしてこきょうのニュースがみられる。

Thanks to the internet, I can watch news from home without leaving Japan.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いる = to be, to stay → ます-form: います → drop 「ます」: い → 「ながらに」+「して」 = while staying right here in Japan → then 見られる (can watch).

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「被害者の家族は、当時の様子を___ながらに語った。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: It attaches directly to a noun — no 「の」.
