〜とばかり(に) (~to bakari (ni)) — as if to say "~"
Nothing was said aloud, but the behaviour said it clearly — that is this form.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You come home from work with a cake. Before you can say a word, the kids rush over and sit at the table — they said nothing, but their behaviour said it clearly: 'This is what we were waiting for!'
- In Japanese: 「『待ってました』とばかりに、テーブルに集まった」.
Meaning
- When the thought never becomes words but shows in the action, use 「〜とばかり(に)」.
- 「ここぞとばかりに」is a fixed phrase — jumping at the chance: 'Now's the moment!'
How to attach
- Keep the thought exactly as it would be said (an order like 帰れ, a plain sentence like もう我慢できない, with or without 「 」) and add 「とばかり(に)」
- The action that shows the feeling comes after.
Versus what you know
- This is 「と言わんばかりに」from the previous point with 「言わん」dropped. The difference: 「んばかり」attaches to any verb (割れんばかり), while 「とばかり」always has a thought in words — a quotation — in front of it.
- N2「かのように」says 'it isn't true, but it looks that way'; with とばかりに the thought is usually real, just not spoken.
Watch out
You use it when watching someone else's behaviour from outside — not about yourself (× 私は「やった」とばかりに…).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
子どもたちは「待ってました」とばかりに、テーブルに集まってきた。
こどもたちは「まってました」とばかりに、テーブルにあつまってきた。
The children gathered at the table as if to say, "We've been waiting for this!"
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 「待ってました」 = 'we've been waiting!' (what they feel, not actually said) → attach 「とばかりに」 → then the behavior: テーブルに集まってきた — their action itself showed that feeling.
セールが始まると、客はここぞとばかりに肉や魚を買い込んだ。
セールがはじまると、きゃくはここぞとばかりににくやさかなをかいこんだ。
As soon as the sale began, customers seized the moment and stocked up on meat and fish.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ここぞ = 'this is it!' (the inner voice saying the chance has come) → 「とばかりに」 → the set phrase ここぞとばかりに → then the action: 買い込んだ (bought lots).
部下が意見を言うと、課長はもう聞きたくないとばかりに席を立った。
ぶかがいけんをいうと、かちょうはもうききたくないとばかりにせきをたった。
When a staff member gave an opinion, the section chief stood up as if to say, "I don't want to hear any more."
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) もう聞きたくない = 'I don't want to hear any more' (the section chief's inner thought, without 「 」) → 「とばかりに」 → then the behavior: 席を立った (got up from the chair) — described by someone watching another person from outside.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「父は___とばかりに、新聞で顔を隠してしまった。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A whole thought, as it would be said, comes before とばかり.
The thought (もう話しかけるな = don't talk to me) + とばかりに. The ん-form belongs to 「と言わんばかり」or 「〜んばかり」.
In which sentence is 「とばかりに」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Whose behaviour is being watched from outside?
とばかりに describes someone else's behaviour (a person or an animal); it is not used about yourself (私は).
What is the difference between 「とばかりに」and 「んばかりに」?
💡 Hint: What does 「と」mark?
「と」marks a quotation — a thought in words comes before とばかりに. んばかり attaches to Vない − ない (割れんばかり). Both are written style.
