〜とはいいながら (~to wa iinagara) — although ~ is so, still

'That is so, and yet…' — 「教師とはいいながら、生徒に教えられることが多い」(I may be a teacher, yet I learn a lot from my students).

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + とはいいながら
    Verb V普通形 + とはいいながら
    い-adj い-adj + とはいいながら

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

For example, talking about your own experience: 「教師とはいいながら、生徒に教えられることが多い」(I may be a teacher, yet I learn a lot from my students).

    Meaning

    • 「〜とはいいながら」= 'that is so (so they say), and yet reality is otherwise'.
    • What follows is something not as expected.

    How to attach

    N or plain form + とはいいながら: 教師とはいいながら・分かっているとはいいながら

    Versus what you know

    • 「〜とはいうものの」(春とはいうものの、まだ寒い) works the same way.
    • N3It is close to 「ながらも」('that is so, and yet') too.

    Watch out

A request or invitation like 「〜てください」「〜ましょう」never follows.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    教師とはいいながら、生徒に教えられることが多い。

    きょうしとはいいながら、せいとにおしえられることがおおい。

I may be a teacher, yet there is a lot I learn from my students.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 教師 = teacher (noun) → 「とはいいながら」 directly = "I am a teacher, and yet" → then something different from what you'd expect: 生徒に教えられることが多い.

    ダイエット中とはいいながら、目の前のケーキはやめられない。

    ダイエットちゅうとはいいながら、めのまえのケーキはやめられない。

I say I am on a diet, yet I cannot resist the cake in front of me.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ダイエット中 = on a diet (noun) → 「とはいいながら」 = "I say so, and yet" → then the opposite behavior: ケーキはやめられない.

    頭では分かっているとはいいながら、なかなか早起きできない。

    あたまではわかっているとはいいながら、なかなかはやおきできない。

I understand it in my head, and yet I just cannot get up early.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 分かっている = I understand → 「とはいいながら」 on the 普通形 → then what doesn't go as intended: なかなか早起きできない.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「日本に10年住んでいる_、漢字はまだ苦手だ。」— fill the blank.
