〜ようがない (~yō ga nai) — there is no way to ~
I would if I could, but there is simply no way — 連絡しようがない・どうしようもない.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A friend asks 「どうして一週間も連絡してくれなかったの?」and you answer 「ごめん、携帯をなくしちゃって、連絡しようがなかったんだ」(sorry, I lost my phone, there was no way to contact you).
Meaning
- 「〜ようがない」= I want to, but how? — there is no means at all.
- A second use works like 「はずがない」: 「これだけ準備したんだから、失敗しようがない」(after this much preparation, there is no room to fail).
How to attach
- ます-stem + ようがない: 直しようがない・送りようがない
- For extra emphasis: ようもない
- する verbs → しようがない
- Set phrase 「どうしようもない」= nothing can be done, hands tied — for things outside your control like a company decision or the weather.
Versus what you know
- N4The potential 「連絡できなかった」only says 'I couldn't'; 「ようがない」adds 'there was zero means, not my fault'.
- N3「〜づらい・がたい」is hard-but-possible; here it is impossible.
Watch out
Not for lack of skill — 「日本語が話しようがない」✗, that is 「話せない」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
携帯をなくしてしまって、連絡しようがなかったんだ。
けいたいをなくしてしまって、れんらくしようがなかったんだ。
I lost my phone, so there was no way to get in touch.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 連絡します = to contact → drop ます: 連絡し → we attach 「ようがない」 → past: ようがなかった → 「んだ」 explains the reason to a friend → 〜て in front says why there was no way.
住所も電話番号もわからないので、書類を送りようがない。
じゅうしょもでんわばんごうもわからないので、しょるいをおくりようがない。
I know neither the address nor the phone number, so there is no way to send the documents.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 送ります = to send → drop ます: 送り → we attach 「ようがない」 → "even if I want to send it, there's no way" → 〜ので in front gives the reason.
会社が決めたことだから、私たちにはどうしようもない。
かいしゃがきめたことだから、わたしたちにはどうしようもない。
The company decided it; there is nothing we can do about it.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) どうする = what to do → ます-stem: どうし → 「ようもない」 (も adds emphasis) → the set word どうしようもない = our hands are tied, nothing can be done → 〜から in front gives the reason.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「彼の連絡先を知らないので、知らせ_。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Attach straight to the ます-stem.
知らせます → 知らせ + ようがない = no way to let him know.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Lack of skill, or lack of means?
Not being able to speak Japanese is 「話せない」; ようがない is only for when no means exists.
What does 「どうしようもない」mean?
💡 Hint: Hands tied.
どうしようもない = there is nothing one can do (= どうすることもできない).
