〜得る (~uru (~eru)) — can / possible / cannot / impossible
'It is possible / it is impossible' — a formal written form; in speech,
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In the news, in reports and in written company notices you see sentences like 「日本では大きな地震はいつでも起こり得る」(a big earthquake can happen in Japan at any time).
- It is written, stiff language (essays, news).
- One exception: 「あり得ない!」is very common in speech — the feeling 'unbelievable': 「家賃3万円で駅から3分?
Meaning
- 「〜得る」= 'the possibility exists'.
- 「〜得ない」= 'there is no such possibility'.
How to attach
- Mind the reading: the positive is usually 「うる」(える is also fine), but the negative is always 「えない」.
- It usually goes with
Versus what you know
N4Don't confuse it with the potential (泳げる・話せる): 泳げる = my ability; 得る = the possibility that something happens in the world.
Watch out
- There is no 「うない」, and no 「ありうます」either.
- Not for a person's skill — 「
- Nor for a situation like 'I haven't drunk, so I can drive'.
In Japan, a major earthquake can happen at any time.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 起こります = to happen/occur → drop ます: 起こり → we attach 「得る」 (read おこりうる) → "it is possible" — not about anyone's skill, but something that can happen in the world.
Anyone can make a mistake, so let's always check in pairs.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あります = to exist/be → drop ます: あり → we attach 「得る」: あり得る (ありうる) → 「ので」 makes it the reason → then the suggestion: 二人でしましょう.
Rent of 30,000 yen and three minutes from the station? That can't be.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あります → あり → we attach 「得ない」: あり得ない — read ありえない (ありうない ✗) → in speech it means "I just can't believe it" → 「なんて」 in front shows surprise.

— the correct form for 'impossible'?
💡 Hint: The negative has only one reading.
There is no 「うない」; ありうる is the positive.
In which sentence is 「得る」wrong?
💡 Hint: Personal ability, or possibility in the world?
Swimming ability is 「泳げる」; 得る is not used for a person's everyday ability (not for things like 英語が話せる).
Where is 「〜得る」mainly used?
💡 Hint: Often used in essays and the like.
得る is stiff written language; in speech only あり得ない is common.
