    〜末(に) (~sue (ni)) — after much ~, finally (a decision / result)

After long thought or long discussion — finally this decision. Not bad, just 'the end of a long road'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vた + 末(に)
    N N + の + 末(に)
    N Vた/N + の + 末の + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Quit the job or not, go back to Nepal or stay in Japan — after months of thinking you finally decided.
    • Telling the 店長, you say: 「よく考えた末に、国に帰ることにしました」.

    Meaning

    • 「末(すえ)に」= 'after doing ~ for a long time, finally this result or decision'.
    • It is neutral — a good result (長い戦いの末、勝った), a bad one, or most often a decision (悩んだ末、手術を受けることにした) all work.
    • Even if it was not really long, if it felt long to the speaker, 「末」is fine.

    How to attach

    • The verb's た-form: 迷った末に
    • Noun + 「の」: 話し合いの末, 転職の末
    • Before a noun, 「末の N」: 努力の末の成功
    • What follows is usually a conclusion or decision: 〜ことにした・〜と決めた・〜となった

    Versus what you know

    • 「あげく」, which you just learned: both have a long, hard process before them, but あげく only ends badly, while 末に is neutral.
    • N3「〜た結果」is plain cause and result; 「末に」adds 'that road was long'.

    Watch out

Do not use 「末」for something small and easy like eating breakfast and going to work — a hard, long stretch must come before it.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    家族とよく話し合った末に、日本で働き続けることに決めた。

    かぞくとよくはなしあったすえに、にほんではたらきつづけることにきめた。

After talking it over carefully with my family, I finally decided to keep working in Japan.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 話し合う = to talk over → た-form: 話し合った → we attach 「末に」 → then the decision: 〜ことに決めた.

    何回かの転職の末、やっと自分に合う仕事が見つかった。

    なんかいかのてんしょくのすえ、やっとじぶんにあうしごとがみつかった。

After changing jobs several times, I finally found work that suits me.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 転職 = changing jobs (a noun, with する taken off) → we add 「の」: 転職の → 「末」 → then the good result: 仕事が見つかった — あげく wouldn't fit here.

    さんざん迷った末に、今のアパートより駅に近い部屋を選んだ。

    さんざんまよったすえに、いまのアパートよりえきにちかいへやをえらんだ。

After a lot of hesitation, I finally chose a room closer to the station than my current apartment.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 迷う = to be unable to decide → 迷った → 「さんざん」 says it took a long time → 「末に」 → then the choice/decision: 部屋を選んだ.
