〜(た)ことにする (~(ta) koto ni suru) — pretend it (didn't) happen; treat it as

Treating what happened as if it never did, or what didn't as if it had — bending the facts to suit yourself.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vた + ことにする
    Verb Vなかった + ことにする

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • You told a friend 'I'll treat you when my pay comes', then lost your wallet. Now you say with a grin: 「おごる話はなかったことにしてくれる?」— 'can we pretend that treat never came up?'
    • When the office tells you 「昇進の話はなかったことにする」, that is a soft way of saying 'cancelled'.

    Meaning

    • 「〜たことにする」= 'it is not really so, but treat it as if it were'.
    • What happened never happened (なかったことにする), what you heard you never heard (聞かなかったことにする), someone else's work is yours (自分で書いたことにする).
    • It is mostly used to bend the facts to suit yourself — sometimes a light joke, sometimes real cheating (コピペして自分で書いたことにする — which gets found out at once!).

    How to attach

    • Vた/Vなかった + ことにする
    • Asking someone: 「ことにしてくれる?・ことにしてください」
    • Your own wish: 「ことにしたい」
    • Keeping it to yourself: 「ことにしておこう」

    Versus what you know

    • N3You learned 「ことにする」= to decide (国に帰ることにした) — there the dictionary form comes before it and it means 'I decided to'.
    • Here the た-form or なかった comes before it, and the meaning is quite different.

    Watch out

「ことにしている」= a regular habit — that is a different meaning, do not mix them.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    財布を落としたから、今日おごる話はなかったことにしてくれる?

    さいふをおとしたから、きょうおごるはなしはなかったことにしてくれる?

I lost my wallet, so can we pretend I never said I'd treat you today?

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) おごる話 = the talk of treating you (it really happened) → 「なかった」 = we change the fact to "it didn't happen" → 「ことにして」 → the request: くれる?

    店長の悪口を聞いてしまったが、聞かなかったことにしておこう。

    てんちょうのわるぐちをきいてしまったが、きかなかったことにしておこう。

I overheard someone badmouthing the manager, but I'll just pretend I never heard it.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 聞く = to hear (I really did hear it) → 聞かなかった = didn't hear → 「ことにして」 → 「おこう」 = let's just leave it that way, keep it to myself.

    友達に手伝ってもらったレポートを、自分一人で書いたことにするのはよくない。

    ともだちにてつだってもらったレポートを、じぶんひとりでかいたことにするのはよくない。

Passing off a report your friend helped with as something you wrote alone is not right.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 書く = to write → 自分一人で書いた = wrote it all alone (not true) → 「ことにする」 → 「の」 makes it a noun → よくない: it's not right.
