〜までして (~made shite) — going as far as (doing) ~
'You went that far?' — surprise and criticism: 借金までして (going as far as borrowing).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Hearing a friend is borrowing money for a new phone: 「借金までして、新しいスマホを買うの?」(you'd go as far as borrowing to buy a phone?).
Meaning
- 「〜までして」= 'going as far as doing that' — the feeling 'that means is too much'.
- Surprise, disbelief and criticism (−) are always in it.
How to attach
- N + までして
- Before it comes an action noun like 借金・カンニング.
- After it you usually get 〜のか・〜なんて・〜たいとは思わない.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「まで」= 'even' (母まで反対した); at N2 the same まで attaches to an action: 「〜までして」「〜てまで」.
- It is the mirror image of 「〜てでも」: 借金してでも買いたい = my own resolve (+); 借金までして買った = shock or disapproval at what someone did (−).
- N3「さえ」also gives an extreme example (ひらがなさえ読めない), but 「まで」carries more of 'you went that far?'.
Watch out
For your own strong determination, never までして — use 「てでも」.
