〜のなんのって (~no nan no tte) — so ~ I can't even describe it
Chatting with a friend: 'it was so hot, I have no words!' — the language of exaggeration.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Your first summer in Japan, working in the convenience-store stockroom. That evening, to a friend: 「倉庫の中、暑いのなんのって、汗が止まらなかったよ」(inside the stockroom it was so hot — I can't even tell you — the sweat wouldn't stop).
- It is said to friends and family while laughing or complaining.
Meaning
- 「〜のなんのって」= 'so X that words fail me' — spoken exaggeration.
- What follows is the result of that 'so much': 〜くらいだ・全然〜なかった・声も出なかった — that is what completes the thought.
How to attach
- い-adj or plain verb + のなんのって: 痛いのなんのって・疲れたのなんのって・びっくりしたのなんのって
- な-adj + な + のなんのって: 静かなのなんのって
- A noun drops 「だ」, but that is rare.
Versus what you know
- N3「何と〜ことか」, and 「忙しさといったら」from Lesson 19, also say 'how much!', but in a calmer, more written tone.
- 「のなんのって」is fully casual, the kind you say with your whole face.
Watch out
Never in formal settings — an interview, a report to the 店長, writing; there say 「とても〜」「非常に〜」.
