〜おそれがある (~osore ga aru) — there is a risk that ~ (something bad)
The 'there is a risk of' of news and weather reports — bad outcomes only, formal.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You switch on the TV in Japan and the weather news says: 「今夜から明日にかけて大雨のおそれがあります」.
- It is stiff and formal — news, weather forecasts, city-office notices, company reports, medicine leaflets.
Meaning
- 「おそれがある」= 'there is a risk that something bad will happen'.
- Not a hunch but 'a high likelihood' based on data or objective grounds.
How to attach
- N + の + おそれがある: 大雨の・津波の
- Dictionary form or ない-form + おそれがある: 広がる・つながらない
- The negative 「おそれはない」is also very common in the news: この地震による津波のおそれはありません
Versus what you know
- N4「かもしれない」works for anything, good or bad, even with friends.
- Don't mix it up with 「〜かねない」(Lesson 13): both give a bad result, but with かねない the cause is clearer (相談しないと文句を言われかねない), while おそれがある is a danger visible from the situation or the data.
Watch out
- Bad outcomes only — 「合格するおそれがある」is impossible.
- Tell a friend 「遅れるおそれがある」and you sound like a newsreader — there, 「遅れるかもしれない」is right.
