〜まい (~mai) — probably not / I will never
The old, written 'not' — two jobs: 'probably not' and 'I will never'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- 「まい」is an old, literary word — newspaper editorials, novels, speeches, and a firm resolution in your own heart.
- It is rare in conversation but common in reading and certain to appear on the JLPT.
Meaning
- ① 〜ないだろう (probably not): on a snowy morning: 「この雪では、電車は時間どおりには来るまい」= 'in this snow the train probably won't come on time'.
(I will not, never again): your own firm decision. Walking out of a shop with terrible service: 「二度と行くまい」.
- ② usually comes with 「二度と・決して・もう」.
How to attach
- Group 1: dictionary form +
- Group 2: dictionary form or
Versus what you know
- N4Like the negative of 「だろう」(ないだろう), but stiff and written.
- Its two partner forms — 「〜(よ)うか〜まいか」(whether or not) and 「〜ではあるまいか」(isn't it perhaps?) — have their own pages.
Watch out
- ① Conjecture まい is only about others or the outside world — you do not say 「私はできまい」about yourself.
- For someone else's will you need 「〜まいと思っているようだ」or 「〜まいとして」(父は口を出すまいと思っているようだ) — without those, it reads as ① (conjecture).
- No polite or past form (×行くまいです・×行くまいでした); in speech say 「ないだろう」or 「ないつもりだ」instead.
In this snow, today's trains probably won't come on time.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 来る = to come (G3, we keep the 辞書形) → we attach 「まい」 = probably won't come (ないだろう) → about others / the outside world, a stiff written feel.
I decided never to go to such a rude shop again.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 行く = to go (G1, 辞書形) → 「二度と」 adds "ever again" → 「まい」 = the resolve not to go → 「と決めた」 shows it's my own decision.
He's still young, so he probably won't understand how hard this job is.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) わかる = to understand (G1, 辞書形) → we attach 「まい」 = probably won't understand (ないだろう) → a guess about someone else; the reason is in 「から」 in front: まだ若い.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 飲む is Group 1 — which form for Group 1?
Group 1 takes dictionary form + まい only: 飲むまい.
In which sentence is 「まい」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A 'probably not' guess about yourself?
Conjecture まい (①) does not take a first-person subject; say 「私はできないだろう」. 「二度とするまい」is fine because it is resolve (②).
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: Can です attach to まい?
まい has no polite or past form (×行くまいです・×行くまいでした). To say it politely, use 「行かないつもりです」.
