    〜(よ)うか〜まいか (~(yo)u ka ~mai ka) — whether to ~ or not

When you are torn — 帰ろうか帰るまいか (to go home or not).

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V(よ)う + か + V辞書形 + まいか
    Verb G2 V(よ)う + か + V辞書形/Vます + まいか

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Going back to Nepal for New Year or not — you are torn: 「正月に国へ帰ろうか帰るまいか、まだ迷っている」(I still can't decide whether to go home for New Year or not).

    Meaning

「〜(よ)うか〜まいか」= 'whether to do it or not' — torn, unable to decide.

    How to attach

    • The same verb twice: volitional + か + dictionary form + まいか
    • Group 2 can also use ます-stem + まいか: 受けようか受けまいか
    • 迷う・悩む・決心がつかない follows.

    Versus what you know

    • The 'will not' of 「〜まい」(previous page) is paired here with 'shall I'.
    • N4Close to 「〜かどうか」(行くかどうか); (よ)うか〜まいか is more literary and stresses being torn.

    Watch out

Both slots must hold the same verb — 帰ろうか行くまいか ✗

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    正月に国へ帰ろうか帰るまいか、まだ迷っている。

    しょうがつにくにへかえろうかかえるまいか、まだまよっている。

I still can't decide whether to go home for New Year's or not.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 帰る = to go back → 帰ろうか (shall I go?) → the same verb again: 帰るまいか (or shall I not?) → then 迷っている = I'm torn.

    会社を辞めようか辞めるまいか、一晩中悩んだ。

    かいしゃをやめようかやめるまいか、ひとばんじゅうなやんだ。

I agonized all night over whether to quit the company or not.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 辞める = to quit → 辞めようか (shall I quit?) → the same verb again: 辞めるまいか (or shall I not?) → then 悩んだ = I agonized over it.

    本当のことを言おうか言うまいか、まだ決心がつかない。

    ほんとうのことをいおうかいうまいか、まだけっしんがつかない。

I still can't make up my mind whether to tell the truth or not.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 言う = to say → 言おうか (shall I say it?) → 言うまいか (or shall I not?) → then 決心がつかない = I can't make up my mind.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「パーティーに行こうか_か、迷っている。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: 行く is Group 1 — dictionary form + まい.
