    〜ではあるまいか (~de wa aru mai ka) — isn't it perhaps ~?

Writing your opinion softened into a question — 原因ではあるまいか (might this not be the cause?).

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + ではあるまいか
    な-adj な-adj + ではあるまいか
    Verb V普通形 + の + ではあるまいか
    い-adj い-adj + の + ではあるまいか

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Writing your opinion in an editorial, report or essay: 「田んぼの生物が減ったのは、農薬の使いすぎが原因ではあるまいか」(might the overuse of pesticides not be why the creatures in the rice fields have declined?).

    Meaning

「〜ではあるまいか」= 「ではないだろうか」— a way to write your opinion softened into a question, 'isn't it perhaps?'.

    How to attach

    • Nouns and な-adjectives attach directly: 原因ではあるまいか
    • Verbs and い-adjectives add 「の」: 解決しないのではあるまいか・高いのではあるまいか

    Versus what you know

    • It is the 'probably not' (〜ないだろう) of 「〜まい」① turned into a question with 「か」.
    • N3Same meaning as 「〜のではないか」; ではあるまいか is its old, written version.

    Watch out

It is rare in speech — when talking, say 「〜のではないか」「〜じゃないかな」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    田んぼの生物が減ったのは、農薬の使いすぎが原因ではあるまいか。

    たんぼのせいぶつがへったのは、のうやくのつかいすぎがげんいんではあるまいか。

Could it not be that the overuse of pesticides is the reason the creatures in the rice fields have declined?

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 原因 = cause (N) → we attach 「ではあるまいか」 directly = isn't it the cause? → instead of saying "this is it", a soft, question-like opinion — the language of written articles.

    このままでは、問題は解決しないのではあるまいか。

    このままでは、もんだいはかいけつしないのではあるまいか。

If things stay as they are, isn't it possible that the problem won't be solved?

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 解決しない = won't be solved (verb, 普通形) → it's a verb, so we add 「の」 → 「ではあるまいか」 = won't it, perhaps? → a soft opinion.

    この値段は、学生には少し高いのではあるまいか。

    このねだんは、がくせいにはすこしたかいのではあるまいか。

Isn't this price perhaps a little high for students?

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 高い = expensive (い-adj) → we add 「の」: 高いの → 「ではあるまいか」 = isn't it expensive? → my own opinion, softened.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

「農薬が原因ではあるまいか。」— which is closest in meaning?

💡 Hint: An opinion softened into a question.
