〜にきまっている (~ni kimatte iru) — is definitely / bound to (spoken)
'No need to even think, it's definitely this' — the hot, spoken certainty; に違いない's blunt sibling.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A friend says 'click this link and you get 100,000 yen'. You: 「そんな話、うそに決まっているよ」— 'that's definitely a lie'.
- It lives in speech, with friends and family, usually with 「よ」.
Meaning
- 「にきまっている」= 'anyone would think so, no need to even think' — not evidence, but the voice of your own gut and experience.
- It works both for a bad prediction (毎日残業ばかりしていたら、体を壊すに決まっている) and for firm confidence (あのチームが勝つに決まっている).
How to attach
- Plain form + にきまっている: 勝つ・しかられる・悪い
- な-adjectives and nouns drop 「だ」and attach 「に」directly: うそに決まっている・便利に決まっている
Versus what you know
- N3「〜に違いない」= the calm certainty of 'there is evidence, so it must be so' — neutral, speech and writing; にきまっている is hotter and blunter.
- 「〜に相違ない」= stiff, reports and writing only (彼が犯人に相違ない) — it has its own page.
Watch out
Do not use 「にきまっている」in a report, a formal office mail or a job interview — there, use 「に違いない」or 「に相違ない」.
