〜というものだ (~to iu mono da) — that is exactly what ~ is (common sense)

Judging a situation: 'by common sense, that is simply ~'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + というものだ
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + というものだ
    い-adj い-adj + というものだ
    Verb V普通形 + というものだ

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

The 店長 says 「今日中にこれを全部終わらせて」and you grumble to a friend: 「それは無理というものだ」— 'that is simply impossible (anyone would say so)'.

    Meaning

    • 「〜というものだ」= look at a concrete situation and judge it: 'not my personal opinion — by common sense this is exactly ~'.
    • 「困ったときに助け合うのが友達というものだ」(helping in trouble — that is what a friend is), 「それが上司というものよ」(that is what bosses are like).

    How to attach

    • N as is: 無理というものだ
    • な-adj without だ: 非常識というものだ
    • い-adj and verbs in the plain form: あつかましいというものだ・がんばれるというものだ
    • In conversation: 「というもんだ」.

    Versus what you know

    • 「ものだ」① states a general rule of the world (薬は苦いものだ); 「無理というものだ」sticks a label — 無理・非常識・失礼・幸せ — on the particular case in front of you.
    • N3「というわけだ」draws a logical conclusion ('so that is why'); this one gives a verdict, not a reasoning.

    Watch out

    • It is not used with words for your own feelings like 「うれしい」「悲しい」— it is a shared judgement, not an emotion.
    • The negative 「〜というものではない」('it is not enough to just…') is a separate form; do not mix them up.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    今日中に全部終わらせろなんて、無理というものだ。

    きょうじゅうにぜんぶおわらせろなんて、むりというものだ。

Finish it all by today? That is simply impossible.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 無理 = impossible (な-adj) → drop だ and attach 「というものだ」 directly → "by common sense, this is simply impossible" → 「なんて」 in front adds "a thing like that!".

    困ったときに助け合うのが、友達というものだ。

    こまったときにたすけあうのが、ともだちというものだ。

Helping each other in hard times — that is what a friend is.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 友達 = friend (N) → 「というものだ」 on the N as it is → the shared understanding "that's what a friend is" → 「〜のが」 shows which thing we mean.

    人の物を勝手に使うのは、失礼というものだ。

    ひとのものをかってにつかうのは、しつれいというものだ。

Using someone's things without asking — that is just plain rude.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 失礼 = rude (な-adj) → 「というものだ」 without だ → "whoever thinks about it, this is rude" → 「〜のは」 points to that particular action.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

「夜中に電話するのは、_。」— which is the correct form for 'that is just inconsiderate'?

    💡 Hint: Does a な-adj need な or だ here?
