〜にすぎない (~ni suginai) — is nothing more than / merely
'Just ~, nothing bigger' — keeping a small or unremarkable thing small.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A customer asks 「値段、もう少し安くなりませんか」and you answer 「すみません、わたしは一アルバイトにすぎないので、店長に聞いてみます」— 'I am only a part-timer, nothing more'.
Meaning
- 「〜にすぎない」= 'just ~, nothing bigger, more special or more numerous than that'.
- It is used only when the speaker sees the thing as small, unimportant or few.
- So it loves numbers: 「合格したのはクラスの2割にすぎない」(only two tenths), 「これは一つの例にすぎない」(just one example).
- Also in a modest excuse: 「お礼なんて。当たり前のことをしたにすぎません」.
How to attach
- N as is: 一社員にすぎない — N + である also works.
- Verbs in the plain form: したにすぎない
- な-adj with だ→である: 便利であるにすぎない
- It pairs with 「ただの〜」「単に〜」「ほんの〜」「あくまで〜」: 「ただのうわさにすぎない」
Versus what you know
N5「だけ」(学生だけ) is a neutral 'only'; 「学生にすぎない」adds the judgement 'and that is no big deal', and sounds harder, more written.
Watch out
Use it on something big you are proud of and it backfires — this is not a tail for shrinking good things.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
わたしは一アルバイトにすぎないので、値段のことは店長に聞いてください。
わたしはいちアルバイトにすぎないので、ねだんのことはてんちょうにきいてください。
I'm only a part-timer, so please ask the manager about the price.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一アルバイト = one part-timer (N) → attach 「にすぎない」 to the N as it is → "not a position bigger than that" → 「ので」 makes it the reason → then the request.
去年、N2に合格した人はクラスの2割にすぎなかった。
きょねん、N2にごうかくしたひとはクラスの2わりにすぎなかった。
Last year only 20% of the class passed N2.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 2割 = 20% (with the feel of "only a few") → 「にすぎない」 on the N → past: 「にすぎなかった」 → "only that many, not a lot".
お礼なんてとんでもない。当たり前のことをしたにすぎません。
おれいなんてとんでもない。あたりまえのことをしたにすぎません。
No need to thank me — I only did what anyone would do.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) した = did (Vた, 普通形) → attach 「にすぎない」 to it as it is → polite 「にすぎません」 → modesty: "I didn't do anything big, just something ordinary".
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「彼の話は、ただのうわさ_すぎない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which particle sits before すぎない?
N + に + すぎない: うわさにすぎない = it is only a rumour.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is にすぎない for something big or something small?
にすぎない is for what the speaker sees as small or unimportant; 「日本一おいしい」is high praise, so it clashes.
「N2に合格した人は、クラスで3人_。」— which says 'only a few'?
💡 Hint: The number feels small.
Number + にすぎない = 'only that many'; にほかならない does the opposite, asserting 'precisely that'.
