Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A 先輩 helps you when you are stuck, and the thought 'how kind!' rises: 「ありがたいことだ」.
- It is a written form and the voice of your own thoughts (独り言).
Meaning
「〜ことだ」(exclamation) = 'it truly is ~', pouring out surprise, joy, sorrow or irony: 「なんとひどいことだ」(how awful!), 「全く困ったことだ」(what a fix!).
How to attach
- い-adj/な-adj + ことだ: ありがたいことだ・残念なことだ
- A feeling verb in た-form like 困った also works.
- な-adjectives take 「な」: 幸せなことだ
Versus what you know
- N3Do not confuse it with 「早く寝ることだ」(advice) — that attaches to a verb and says 'you should'; this one attaches to an adjective and pours out feeling.
- Its partners 「〜ことだろう」and 「〜ことか」also say 'how ~!', but they need a word like どんなに (their own pages).
Watch out
- Only adjectives that express the speaker's own feeling.
- With friends you hear 「なんて〜んだろう」instead.
