〜ことだろう (~koto darō) — how (very) ~ it must be!

'How worried she must be!' — pouring out feeling with どんなに: どんなに心配していることだろう.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

Verb 疑問詞 + V普通形 + ことだろう
    い-adj 疑問詞 + い-adj + ことだろう
    な-adj 疑問詞 + な-adj + な/である + ことだろう
    N 疑問詞 + N + である + ことだろう

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Thinking of your mother back in Nepal: 「国の母はどんなに心配していることだろう」(how worried my mother back home must be!).
    • It is a written form and the voice of your own thoughts (独り言).

    Meaning

「〜ことだろう」= 'how very ~ it must be!' — said with a full heart, thinking of someone's situation or feelings.

    How to attach

    • A degree question word such as 「どんなに・どれほど・何回・なんと・いったい」must come before: どんなに心配していることだろう
    • Plain form + ことだろう; 「な」or 「である」after a な-adjective or noun.

    Versus what you know

    • N3Same meaning as 「どんなに会いたかったことか」— 「ことだろう」is the partner added at N2.
    • The exclamation 「〜ことだ」(ありがたいことだ) attaches straight to an adjective; ことだろう needs a degree question word.

    Watch out

    • Without the degree word, 「心配していることだろう」is just a plain 'probably'.
    • With friends you hear 「なんて〜んだろう」instead.
