    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Remembering the hard days in Japan, to yourself: 「日本に来てから、何回国に帰りたいと思ったことか」(since coming to Japan, how many times I've wished to go home!).
    • It is a written form and the voice of your own thoughts (独り言).

    Meaning

「〜ことか」= 'how very ~!' — not a question, but pouring out feeling.

    How to attach

    • A degree question word such as 「どんなに・どれほど・何回・なんと・いったい」must come before.
    • Plain form + ことか; 「な」or 「である」after a な-adjective or noun.

    Versus what you know

    • N3You learned 「どんなに会いたかったことか」— this is that same ことか.
    • 「〜ことだろう」means the same: どんなに心配していることだろう.

    Watch out

    • Without the degree word the sentence fails — 「彼は毎日勉強したことか」✗.
    • With friends you hear 「なんて〜んだろう」instead.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

How many times I've wished I could go home since coming to Japan!

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 帰りたいと思った = I wanted to go home → 「何回」 (how many times) in front → we attach 「ことか」 → like talking to yourself; the same job as ことか in N3.

    この日を何年待ったことか。

    このひをなんねんまったことか。

How many years I have waited for this day!

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 待つ = to wait → past: 待った → 「何年」 (how many years) in front → we attach 「ことか」 → not a question, but the feeling "what a long wait!".

    家族の声が聞けて、どんなにうれしかったことか。

    かぞくのこえがきけて、どんなにうれしかったことか。

How happy I was to hear my family's voices!

💡 Hint: A plain form goes before ことか.
