    〜とは (~to wa) — what ~ means is… (definition)

The stiff, dictionary-style というのは — for documents, presentations and city-office language.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + とは + 〜だ/〜である/〜という意味だ/〜のことだ
    N N + とは + どういう意味ですか
    Verb V普通形/い-adj/な-adj + とは + 思わなかった/知らなかった

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • A city-office form reads 「『ふよう』とは、生活の面倒を見ることである」; a company briefing says 「当社の理念とは…」.
    • And when you meet a word you don't know: 「『校正』とはどういう意味ですか」.

    Meaning

    • 「〜とは」= explaining what a word means — 'x means y', in the stiff, written, dictionary style.
    • Recognise one more 「とは」too: 「日本の冬がこんなに寒いとは思わなかった」— the surprise 'I never thought it would be like this'.

    How to attach

    • Attach 「とは」straight after a noun; what follows explains the meaning or essence: 〜だ・〜である・〜という意味だ・〜のことだ
    • The surprise 「とは」follows the plain form and is followed by 思わなかった・知らなかった・驚いた.

    Versus what you know

    • N3This is exactly the job of 「〜というのは」(Lesson 3) — 「とは」is that form in a suit, the written style.
    • Think in levels: with a friend 「ラーメンって何?」(the N3 って), a bit more formal 「というのは」, in reports, documents and presentations 「とは」.

    Watch out

It is a stiff expression — 「あれとは何?」in a chat with friends sounds odd.
