Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Telling your family in Nepal about summer here: 「日本の夏の暑さといったら、もう言葉にならないよ」(the heat of a Japanese summer — there are no words).
Meaning
- 「〜といったら」= stressing that the degree of something is far beyond ordinary.
- After it comes a sentence of extreme degree or surprise, like 'unimaginable' or 'I couldn't make a sound': 「締め切り前の忙しさといったら、想像もできないと思うよ」.
- In speech the second half is often dropped — 'you can guess the rest': 「暗い道を一人で歩いたときの怖さといったら……」.
How to attach
- N + といったら — a noun of degree or feeling comes first: 暑さ・忙しさ・驚き・怖さ・うれしさ・景色
- Turn an い-adjective into a noun with 「〜さ」first: 暑い→暑さ
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「日本料理といったら、すしだ」(Lesson 3) — that was raising a topic, 'the first thing that comes to mind about x'.
- Same shape, different job: here a noun of degree or feeling comes first and an extreme degree follows.
Watch out
An ordinary degree like 「まあまあだ」cannot follow — it clashes with the form.
