A feeling or wish so strong you can't hold it in — 会いたくてしかたがない (I miss them so much I can't stand it).

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vて + しかたがない
    い-adj い-adj [い] + くて + しかたがない
    な-adj な-adj + で + しかたがない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Coming home after a night shift you tell a friend 「眠くてしょうがない」; thinking of the family in Nepal, 「家族に会いたくてしかたがない」— that is when you use it.

    Meaning

    • 「疲れた」versus 「疲れてしかたがない」— what changes? The first is plain; the second says 'it is too much, I cannot bear it'.
    • Feelings, wishes, body sensations — this is the neutral form that works with all of them.

    How to attach

    • Verb て-form + しかたがない (気になって・時間がかかって)
    • い-adjective: drop い, add くて (眠くて・会いたくて)
    • な-adjective + で (心配で・ひまで)
    • In speech, with friends: 〜てしょうがない (眠くてしょうがない)

    Versus what you know

    • N4You learned 「とても」「すごく」, but 「眠くてしかたがない」says something 「とても眠い」cannot: the sleepiness is winning and you cannot hold it back.
    • Two more endings with the same meaning have their own pages: 「〜てたまらない」(mostly body sensations) and 「〜てかなわない」(always a nuisance).

    Watch out

It describes your own feeling; when you talk about someone else (third person), add 「ようだ・らしい」— 「赤ちゃんは不安でしかたがないらしい」.
