Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
After a night shift when your eyes won't stay open: 「眠くてたまらない」; when you haven't eaten since morning: 「おなかがすいてたまらない」.
Meaning
- 「〜てたまらない」= 'it is too much, I cannot bear it' — the same meaning as 「〜てしかたがない」.
- It goes mostly with things the body feels — 眠い・痛い・かゆい・おなかがすいた・暑い.
How to attach
- Verb て-form + たまらない (おなかがすいて)
- い-adjective: drop い, add くて (眠くて・かゆくて)
- な-adjective + で (不安で)
Versus what you know
- N4「眠くてたまらない」says something 「とても眠い」cannot: the sleepiness is winning and you cannot hold it back.
- 「〜てしかたがない」is neutral and fits any feeling; 「〜てたまらない」leans towards body sensations.
- 「〜てかなわない」is only for negative, troublesome things.
Watch out
It describes your own feeling or sensation; for someone else (third person), add 「ようだ・らしい」— 「赤ちゃんは不安でたまらないらしい」.
