Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When noise next door or an inconvenient place is wearing you down — when you feel 困る: 「うるさくてかなわない・不便でかなわない」.
Meaning
- 「〜てかなわない」= 'this is a real nuisance, it is wearing me down'.
- Like 「〜てしかたがない」it means 'I can't bear it', but always in a negative sense.
How to attach
- It mostly comes after adjectives:
- い-adjective: drop い, add くて (うるさくて・暑くて)
- な-adjective + で (不便で)
Versus what you know
- Four similar endings, different flavours: 「しかたがない」is neutral; 「しょうがない」is its spoken form; 「たまらない」mostly goes with body sensations.
- 「かなわない」is common in everyday speech too (「暑くてかなわないよ」), but it is always negative — a nuisance.
Watch out
- Never use 「かなわない」for joy, love or worry — it only carries the 困る feeling.
- 「うれしくてかなわない」✗ → 「うれしくてしかたがない」✓
- It also describes your own feeling — for someone else add 「ようだ・らしい」.
