Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- It is the word you hear at work, in station announcements and in company email.
- On the train: 「お降りの際は足元にご注意ください」(mind the step when getting off) — nobody says 「降りるとき」there.
Meaning
- 「〜際(さい)」means exactly the same as 「とき」— just wearing a suit: formal.
- An instruction usually follows: 〜てください・〜が必要です.
How to attach
- After a noun put 「の」: お帰りの際
- After a verb, nothing — dictionary or た-form: 利用する際・地震が起きた際
- You can add 「に」or 「は」after it: 際に・際は
Versus what you know
- N4「〜とき」(「食べるとき」「帰るとき」) — for everyday talk that is all you need; 「際」is its formal version.
- The next page, 「〜に際して」, is one level higher still — for a big occasion like opening a shop or graduating.
Watch out
Say 「ご飯を食べる際」to a friend and they will laugh — small everyday things are 「とき」territory.
