〜に際して (~ni saishite) — on the occasion of (formal)
At the time of a big, special occasion — 「開店に際して」= on the occasion of opening the shop.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
For a big, special (not everyday) occasion like opening a shop, graduating or starting a new job — in speeches, notices and formal papers.
Meaning
- 「〜に際して」= 'on the occasion of, at the time of'.
- Like 「際」it means 'when', but one level higher — only for a big, special occasion.
How to attach
- Straight onto a noun, no 「の」: 開店に際して・卒業に際して
- With a verb, the dictionary form: 会社を始めるに際して
- In writing the short 「に際し」; before a noun 「に際しての N」
Versus what you know
- N4「〜とき」is the everyday 'when'.
- The previous page's 「〜際」is the 'when' of notices and offices (お帰りの際・利用する際).
- 「に際して」is higher still — only for a special one-time occasion, and a noun takes no 「の」.
Watch out
Not for small everyday things — 「ご飯を食べるに際して」sounds odd; use 「とき」.
