〜にあたって (~ni atatte) — when about to / upon (starting)
When about to start something important — 「入社にあたって」= upon joining the company.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- First day at a new company, giving a speech: 「
- A teacher before the exam: 「
- It is the word of speeches and formal documents.
Meaning
「〜にあたって」also means 'when', but with a particular feeling: you are about to start something big and important yourself (入社・留学・入院・退職) — the moment you get ready and make up your mind.
How to attach
- Short form in speeches: 「〜
- Extra-polite form: 「〜
Versus what you know
The previous page's 「〜に際して」is formal too, but 「にあたって」only takes forward-looking undertakings you start yourself.
Watch out
Not for unwanted things that just happen to you, like an accident or a natural disaster — those take 「に際して」or 「際」(災害に際して・事故の際).
